Rescue At Sea

At a recent party I chatted with a professional photographer who was photographing the event. Our conversation concluded along these lines:

Him: Are you a professional?
Me: Nah, an amateur who just loves taking photos.
Him: Do you take lots of photos?
Me: Oh yes, lots and lots.
Him: Well, then you're a professional.
Me: Why so?
Him: This is what professionals do. One of the many will tell the story.

I'm referencing this conversation today because of the photo I posted above. It tells a story. If you click on it, you will see a lifeguard on a jet ski towing what looks to be a small boat with a person in it. I have no idea what happened, but after downloading the photo, I grokked what was happening.

I had simply been doing what I always do: taking lots and lots and lots of photos. 98% of them are trashed, but every now and then, one has a intriguing or provocative story.

This photo is of my partner and me on a horseback ride at a ranch on the North Shore of Maui many years ago. If this photo looks fuzzy and ancient, that's because it is! He is wearing a bandanna on his head, so if his head looks odd, this is why.

We love to ride and have taken many horseback adventures around the world. We don't keep horses or ride every day because our busy lifestyle prevents us from doing so, but we're both ardent horse lovers.

The sugar refinery plant is a famous Maui landmark, and one of the best places to capture a photo of it is on a winding back road, a famous short cut to eliminate the traffic you will encounter traveling through Kahului, the main business district of Maui.

Whales make a footprint which is visible on the surface of the water-- a circular area where the surface of the water is smoother than the surrounding water. The whale's tail creates a vortex as it moves through the water just below the surface.

Yesterday my partner and I were shopping at Costco in Kahului when we spotted this AMAZING service dog with his friend. We were both struck by the PRESENCE of this dog, and actually it seemed as if this dog was more like an angel in a dog's body! The way this very special service dog walked...the aura...the energy...well, I was blown away, and since I'm more of the introverted, sensitive type and am lucky to have an extroverted partner, I asked him if he wouldn't ask this man and very special dog for a photo. He obliged, and then he requested his companion to sit down for this photograph.

I can feel the love and respect these two have for one another in this photo.

After The Rain--The Blooms

Many plants are blooming on Maui and at our home--assisted, no doubt, by the generous rainfall of recent weeks. The mosquito plants on one of our decks are blooming tiny pink flowers. I just planted these mosquito plants about a year ago, and since that time, they've grown a LOT.

Mosquito plants are so named because they keep away mosquitoes. Click here if you'd like to read more about mosquito plants.

Of Once-Used Imus

This structure is the Imu once used by the Renaissance Resort and now overgrown from disuse.

An Imu is "a Hawaiian "underground oven" used for cooking. Fire is used to heat riverbed rocks which are covered with banana tree stumps to create steam. Food is wrapped with heat resistant banana leaves & Ti leaves then covered with earth and sand. Left to cook underground, temperatures can reach over 450 degrees, and the surrounding area can be extremely hot."

This is the site of the former Renaissance Hotel Resort which was officially closed Sept 6, 2007. Rumor has it that the property was to be turned into a luxurious, five-star timeshare destination. However, with only 30% of the funds raised--so the rumor goes--the property may revert back to a hotel once again.

I discovered this vending machine at the Queen Ka'ahumana Center, and it made me chuckle and whip out my camera from my purse. If you have acne, you can purchase a remedy from this machine.

The Mystery Tree

We don't know the story about this decorated tree, and that's why I call it The Mystery Tree. Someone has gone to the effort to decorate it with ornaments, and before the rains came, the presents under the tree were beautifully wrapped. Now it looks as if someone or something decided to open one of these packages. At night, the tree is lit with tiny lights, perhaps by means of solar.

We've passed by this tree so many times during the busy Holiday Season, and my partner begged me to go and take a photo of it--which I finally did today! So now he's happy I can share this Mystery Tree with the world!

Today is my 700th post on Wailea Daily Photo!!! And lately I've been debating how much longer I wish to continue this daily posting! Then I received a loving, encouraging email from one of the City Bloggers (Mahalo Nui Loa dear friend!) which renewed my flagging energies, and thus, I've decided to carry on...at least until post 777. :Smile:

The above photos were taken at a local sushi restaurant in the Maui Mall called Genki Sushi. The sushi chef is excellent, and the prices aren't steep!

I've not been blogging as much as of late because I've been on a heavy work-out routine to get in super shape for an upcoming arduous journey this coming Spring.

Today my podner and I went for long hike down streets where we rarely venture, and what a joy it was to discover this darling girl sitting all by herself selling limes, popcorn, and one of her pictures which she will draw for 25 cents. Unfortunately, we didn't have any monies on us as we weren't expecting to stumble upon her. But I may go back later and give her some business.

See those items on the bottom of this pastry case? This is tiramasu, and imho Marco's Restaurant in Kahului makes one of the best of this desert on Maui.

BTW, as much as I love the tiramasu at Marco's, I was *good* and abstained.

Stand-up paddle boards have become increasingly popular on Maui, and many places rent them so you don't have to purchase.

I've never tried it, so I don't know how challenging it is or how hard it is to direct the board. In the second photo, it looks as if the paddle boarder is heading directly towards the swimmer.

Here are MORE flowers for sale at Long's Drugstore--buckets of proteas. Proteas are an another flower grown on Maui and shipped all over the world.

According to Wikipedia: "The genus Protea was named in 1735 by Carolus Linnaeus after the Greek god Proteus who could change his form at will, because proteas have such different forms."

I love proteas, and one of the best places to find protea bouquets cheaply is alongside the roadside in areas like Kula, Huelo, and Hana where there is an honor system in place. You simply put your monies into a safe or a bin located at the stand and select your bouquet.

Maui doesn't have gorgeous fall foliage or dramatic change of seasons which you will find in other parts of the world. Our seasons slide into one another with grace. However, many transplants to Maui decorate as IF the seasons change and put up seasonal decorations.

The best season for Maui is the November-May time period. Yes, the ocean water is a bit chillier, but still quite swim-able..the nights are cooler, and there is very little need for air conditioning.

Kona Brewing Company is the largest microbrew company in Hawaii and has been in business since 1996. Check out their website here.

Maui also has it's own microbrew companies such as Maui Brewing Company.
